Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (RTDC), Indian Railways and Department of Tourism, Govt. of India and Rajasthan jointly launched the Palace on Wheels on 26 January 1982 as a special Heritage Train for providing unique and memorable experience to the tourists visiting Rajasthan and Agra.

This train was based on a meter gauge rake comprising of wooden carving saloons of the erstwhile rulers of the princely State of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. In 1991 the train was upgraded with a new air-conditioned meter gauge Palace on Wheels. Consequent to the gauge conversion in the state of an all new air-conditioned broad gauge Palace on Wheels was launched in 1995 which has been noted as one of the top ten luxury trains by media from across the world. Encouraged by the success of the Palace on Wheels Rajasthan Tourism has now launched their latest product in the market.

A journey aboard the heritage Train can be offered as either a stand alone trip combined with an Golden Triangle Itinerary through Delhi - Agra - Jaipur or incorporated either wholly or partly in a trip through Rajasthan.

ITINERARY
   
Day 1 JAIPUR TUESDAYS / FRIDAYS
Check in at the Jaipur Railway Station at 1830 hrs. The train departs for Bikaner at 1930 hrs and dinner is served on board at 2000 hrs. Overnight stay on board the train.
   
Day 2 JAIPUR - BIKANER WEDNESDAYS / SATURDAYS
Arrive at Bikaner at 0600 hrs. Breakfast is served on board and leave at 8.30 by coaches for sightseeing tour of the Fort. Later visit the Haat from where continue on to Gajner Wildlife sanctuary. Lunch is served at Gajner following which a safari is arranged at 1545 hrs. Return to Bikaner for evening tea served at the Lalgarh Palace. Return to the Railway Station at 1830 hrs where dinner is served before the train resumes its journey at 2330 hrs.
   
Day 3 TAAL CHHAPPAR AND SHEKHAWATI THURSDAYS / SUNDAYS
Arrival at Padhiyar Railway Station at 0400 am. Depart at 0715 hrs for Tal Chhapar. Later continue to Ramgarh where the Mahansar Havelis are visited. From Mahansar proceed to Mandawa. Lunch is served at Mandawa Resort following which the group continues on to Nawalgarh. After sightseeing tour and High Tea at Nawalgarh return to the train at 1930.

Dinner is served at 2000 hrs and the train departs for its return journey to Jaipur at 2230 hrs.
   
Day 4 JAIPUR FRIDAYS / MONDAYS
Arrival at Jaipur Jn Railway station at 0630 am. Breakfast is served on board and this magnificent journey through the open air art gallery of Rajasthan comes to an end.
 
Facilities onboard the Heritage Train


. Nine saloons with heritage ambiance/décor.
. Capacity 72 Berths.
. Two Restaurants - Maharaja and Maharani.
. Well Stocked Bar cum Lounge.
. Kitchen and service cars.
. Each saloon has a capacity to accommodate eight guests in four bedrooms with two bathrooms on sharing basis.
