PUSHKAR FAIR SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Pushkar- " the blessing of Lord Brahma"
11 Kms. from Ajmer on the edge of the desert lies the tiny tranquil town of Pushkar along the bank of the picturesque Pushkar Lake - an important pilgrimage spot. The lake has a mythological significance associated with it. According to myth, Lord Brahma was on his way to search for a suitable place to perform a 'Yagna' (a fire sacrifice). While contemplating, a lotus fell from his hand on the earth and water sprouted from three places. One of them was Pushkar, where Lord Brahma performed his Yagna. Surrounded by hills on three sides, Pushkar abounds in temples. Of these the most famous is the Brahma Temple - the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in the country. The holy lake has 52 ghats and pilgrims taking a ritual dip in the lake are a common sight .

Pushkar fair -
Citadel of culture, colours & camels Every year thousands of devotees throng around the full moon day of Kartik Purnima in October - November to take a holy dip in the lake. A huge and colorful cattle fair - called the Pushkar fair is held during this time. A host of cultural events against the backdrop of this pretty setting are organised like folk dances and puppet shows. Cattle auction and camel races are also a part of the festivities. This is also the time of famous camel fair. This fair is a hub of activities like camel safaris, henna application facility on palm - for ladies, turban tying contest etc.

14 Nov : Delhi (B)
This morning drive past the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the administrative North and South Blocks, the circular House of Parliament and the Memorial Arch of the First World War called India Gate. Drive past the Jami Masjid, built on a natural elevation by Shah Jahan in 1651-56 AD. It is one of the largest mosques in India and most impressive structurally. With its black and white striped onion domes and minarets, it is one of the largest and most elegant mosques in India . Continue on past the Red Fort, built as the royal residential and official complex of Shah Jahan. It is an irregular oblong. The palaces mostly in marble are along the river front. Drive on to the Raj Ghat, and visit the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

In the afternoon visit the Lotus shaped Bahai Temple . Its petals constructed in concrete and faced with white marble have an extraordinary lightness. Nine pools of water around the structure add to the illusion of a lotus floating in water. Continue on to the 72.5-meter tall Qutab Minar built by Qutbuddin Aibak (1192-98) founder of the Slave Dynasty. Adjoining it is the Quwwatu'l-Islam mosque that is built from materials plundered from Hindu Temples of Qila Rai Pithora. In the courtyard stands a rust free iron pillar - the dhvaja stanbha (flag-pole), raised originally as a standard to Vishnu in the 4th century AD by Chandra Gupta. Cast in a process that is lost to the world, the 7.2 meter pillar has not rusted through the centuries. Overnight at Hotel.

This evening witness the Son et Lumiere at the Red Fort of Delhi.  Indian history from the time of the Mughals till the independence of India unfolds as the story of Delhi and the Red Fort comes alive in the dark night.  The skillful mosaic of sound and light illuminates legends from a hoary and passionate past.  And when the story is told, you may wonder if indeed it was you the listener, who was without a doubt the teller of this tale.
15 Nov : Delhi-Agra (203 Kms/ 4 hrs) (B)
Morning drive to Agra & upon arrival check in at Hotel. Afternoon visit the Taj Mahal, mausoleum of Empress Mumtaz Mahal, the beloved spouse of Shah Jahan and described as the most extravagant monument ever built for love. The vastness of geometric perfection and balance with design, together with the finesse of the rich inlay work with semi precious stones in white marble is executed with great skill. It marks the most developed stage of Mughal architecture. The designer is believed to be Ustad Ahmad Lahori (closed on Friday).

Continue on to the Agra Fort, which lies on the bend of the river Yamuna.  Built by Akbar over 1565-73 AD, it was successively occupied and added to by Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan.  The prominent edifices inside are Jahangiri Mahal, Khas Mahal, the vineyard Anguri Bagh, the ornamental bath Shish Mahal and Masumman Burj where Shah Jahan died a captive of his son Aurangzeb, passing his last days gazing at the Taj Mahal.    Afternoon drive back to Delhi & upon arrival check-in at Hotel.. This afternoon the sight-seeing tour through the city includes the City Palace and its Museum, a treat of textiles, arms, carpets, paintings, manuscripts and elegant architecture.  Outside the City Palace is the Royal Astronomical Observatory, whose precision of instruments is a unique achievement for the 18th century.
