The trek combines the beauty of two of the most beautiful valleys in Hiachal Pradesh. Starting at Mcleodganj (Dharamsala) at about 6000 ft in the Kangra valley and passing over the mighty snowbound Dhuladhar, the trail ends at Machhetar in the Ravi valley. The scenic Kangra valley is situated between the snow cappede peaks of the Dhauladhar and the olling Shivalik Hills, while the Ravi valley is bounded to the North by the Pir Panjal, to the South by the Dhauladhar and to the East by the Bara Bangal range.
The trail is the traditional migratory and garzing route of the "Gaddis", the colourful, semi-nomadic Hindu shepherds who belong to the Kangra and Chamba districts and who tend their flocks on the high mountain meadows adjoining the Dhauladhar and the Pir Panjal ranges throughout the summer months. Each spring, they bring their flocks from the foothills of the Kangra, over the Dhauladhar to the Ravi valley. From there, they go higher acros the Pir Panjal to the main Himalaya, and on to the rich grazing grounds of the Lingti valley in Spiti.
The trek provides great opportunity to interact with the "Gaddis" and appreciate their culture along with the chance to observe the ways of life in the high mountain villages. Moving through forests of pine, Oak, fir and ash, the trail passes through the high Alpine zone - the open grazing areas and the flowering meadows above the tree-line. Wildlife such as the Black and Brown Bear, the Fed Fox and Leopard, though hard to spot, inhabit the upper regions.
